Markey and Wyden call upon CMS to implement Independence at Home immediately

The first ever “Independence at Home” day was celebrated June 29 from 8:30-10 am in the US Capitol Visitor Center. IAH sponsors Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), Representative Ed Markey (D-PA), and key staffers Mark Bayer and Emily Katz received awards from the American Academy of Home Care Physicians, who also recognized the efforts of the 33 member IAH coalition.

Calling IAH “the future of healthcare,” the Senator and Congressman released a letter to CMS asking the agency to implement the IAH demonstration “as soon as practicable.” Senator Wyden further stated that the IAH demo should be implemented within 6 months and ultimately should be available in every corner of the country.

From the back window of his rowhouse, Karl Schwengel can see the Capitol. But the 11 blocks might as well be so many miles, because he can barely walk across his bedroom, let alone go for a stroll.

Schwengel, 79, has congestive heart failure and arthritis. And although he lost 60 pounds during a recent hospital stay, he still weighs in at 260 pounds.

House Call Medicine: Shaping the future

For the third year in a row, the AAHCP Annual Scientific Meeting was a sell-out. Held on May 12, 2010 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida, the meeting features a new networking breakfast, member vignettes, panel presentations and concurrent breakout track focusing on home care education and practice management.
